Welcome to December's Newsletter.
Welcome to this month's newsletter and I apologise for the 'no show' for a November edition! Winter has certainly arrived with a change in the weather - a mixture of cold and dull rainy days certainly makes it difficult to be motivated for golf. However this is the time to focus on your practice and to build good habbits, as they say "It's not about what you do when people are watching, it's what you do when they're not". Noone will see you on the practice ground because you'll be the only one there.... this is the attitude of the best players (and the very reason they are the best).
I get asked quite often if I'm quieter in the winter and I suppose I am slightly, but not as much as you may think. This time of year is one where I tend to regroup, assess my year and spend some time working 'on' my business rather than 'in' my business and to give you an idea, here are some of my upcoming jobs for the off season:
- Create and launch The Scoring Club app and community
- Update my website
- Plan my coaching sessions for 2026, clinics etc.
- Plan my first golf day (March 2026)
And I'm sure there will be much more going on. I am someone who has to stay busy and keep looking forward to see how I can become a better coach and offer a better service to my golfers.
A winter plan for your game
This may be a repeat and apologies for sounding like a broken record but if you want to play better golf next year then now is the time to have your game assessed and build a plan for your development - so you can hit the ground running when the season begins.
If you want to play better golf next year than this past season then book in for an initial consultation session and I will help you become a better player and enjoy the game more than ever!

My first 'client' golf day!
I'm really excited to announce that I will be holding my first ever golf day. This is something I have wanted to do for a while and now with my goal of creating and engaging with my 'community' I am excited to get it in the diary.
The details will be released in the coming weeks but it will likely be in March and hosted at Blackmoor. Stay tuned for more information!

Student Case Study: Rob Sherwood

This month's student of the month is Rob. Rob is a member of Blackmoor and has been having lessons on and off for a couple of years now. I wanted to feature Rob as he is improving his game nicely and has just recently shot his PB score of 87 playing off a handicap of 20.7.
What we have been working on
Rob have 2 main tendencies in his golf swing that are problematic an they both occure in the takeaway/backswing section. He will tend to 1) Create a too shut clubface at the top of the swing and 2) keep his hands and club 'infront' of his body to the top of the swing. This puts him in a position where he has to use a 'blocking' motion of the hands to keep the face from closing too much through the swing (Rob's bad shot is a 'hook' or 'push' which are brother and sister faults stemming from the same root cause).
Rob is focussing on creating a more neutral clubface at the top and with a little swing thought in transition which helps to keep the face square coming down.
You'll see a huge different here in Rob's backswing from nearly 3 years ago where it used to be cramped in over his shoulder with a very shut clubface (left pic), to a much wider swing with a squarer face (right pic), a much better position to deliver the club from with

The biggest issue with his fault is getting height with the longer clubs, the driver in particular. This is because his compensating move in the downsing would deloft the club (not a problem if there is plenty of loft to start with i.e. 9 iron but with a driver it simply doesn't work).
Rob reported that his drives are going higher and straighter and this was the main component that helped him shoot his best ever score.
Well done Rob!
